Our School

St Joseph's school was founded in 1970. The first principal was Mr. John McHale. When the school first started the teachers were Mr. John McHale , Mr. Conner Ward, Ms. June Coulter and Ms Ann Troddyn.

It was founded by North West Parents and Friends Association. The original school building was located in Quay St. opposite the Town Hall. One year later the school moved to a purpose built single story school in Ballytivnan Sligo.

Ms. June Coulter became principal in 1994. She stayed with the school for over 30 years retiring in 2007. Our longest serving member of staff is Mrs. Marie Mc Gowan, who joined the school in 1981. Our current principal Ms. Carmel Wynne has been with the school since 1996.

Our school caters for pupils between the ages of 5 and 18 years.
The Outreach class based in Drumshambo Co. Leitrim provides education for pupils assessed as having extra needs.

Both Centres offer a supportive, learning environment to enable the holistic development of the pupil to his/her full potential. There is a strong emphasis on the key areas of literacy, numeracy, SPHE, development of self- esteem, social skills and life skills.

The school, although non-denominational and respectful of all religions, has a strong Christian ethos, with pupils prepared for the sacraments.

In the main school, classes are divided into junior and senior sections. In the junior section, all pupils are provided access to the full curriculum, providing a broad and balanced education. In addition, senior pupils have access to home economics and woodwork. Senior pupils work towards achieving the FETAC Level 3 Certificate, with the school providing a variety of modules covering key areas such as Communications, Maths, Computer Literacy and Home Economics. There is a strong emphasis on pre-vocational preparation in the final year with pupils undertaking placements in various adult training centres and local businesses.
